Abstract
Containers have completely revolutionized the way we build, share, and run workloads across the entire industry. In many ways though, we're still just getting started. In this talk, we'll go over a brief history of containers and how they fit into the current ecosystem, including Kubernetes. We'll also take a look forward to see how containers can help make education, learning, and work easier for us all.

Biography
Michael Irwin is an Adjunct Faculty Instructor in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech, where he teaches courses on containers and Kubernetes. For the past six months, he has been an Engineering Manager at Docker, where he is focusing on making container-supported development more approachable by focusing on onboarding, education, and training. Previous to his work at Docker, he worked full-time for 11 years in the Division of IT at Virginia Tech where he focused on modernizing operations by using cloud, containers, CI/CD, and more. Michael earned both his MEng (2020) and BS (2011) at Virginia Tech. Outside of work, you can find him spending time with his six kids, involved in church activities, and trying to spend time outdoors!
